Maintain an awareness of the pet's overall health. Be in the habit of giving him or her a routine exam frequently so you will be able to spot any strange problems and take the appropriate measures before they grow to be truly serious and hard to deal with. Whenever you do need to start treating your pet, opt for natural and herbal remedies to make sure you are choosing a gentle solution to your pet's condition. Limit the use of strong medications which could trigger significant side-effects in the long run.
Natural dog remedies are easy to find all over the net however it is always hard to know what treatment is most beneficial to buy. A lot of the cat and dog foods are full of artificial ingredients that could harm or even kill the animal. Make it a point to check ingredients and get only the foods you have researched yourself and found to be made using healthy, wholesome ingredients. Sometimes changing to a natural diet, rather than commercial dog food, will cause a huge enchancment in your dog's health.
Many of the best natural pet remedies are available online. Investigate some of the products referenced on our site for a place to begin. It may seem a little difficult to find beneficial organic products but if you carry out just a little exploration you will find the natural pet remedies you'll need. Most cost a bit more than the items at your superstore, but isn't your pet worth it?

Fresh garlic isn’t going to do anything, in fact it isn’t good to give your dog fresh garlic. It should be cooked or in capsules.
Natural Dog Foods
Garlic is a myth its actually toxic for dogs in large amounts.

I use Comfortis because of the same problem you had with topicals.
I have never found natural remedies to work for me.

You can use either one. But if you are going to use the fresh garlic then you would probably need to add other ingredients to make it last longer and work more efficiently (and cook it of course). Here is a recipie that I found that is supposed to prevent fleas and ticks.
Ingredients:
1 cup cooked hamburger meat
1 tablespoon brewer’s yeast
1 clove of fresh garlic, chopped
1 raw egg
Directions:
Cook hamburger meat in skillet until browned, set aside to cool. Combine egg, garlic, and brewer’s yeast. Add to hamburger meat, stir until blended well. Feed to Dog.
Note: Use once a month to control fleas and ticks.
Good luck! I hope this works out for you!

Garlic is toxic to dogs!
I would have your dog vaccinated against tick borne diseases and maybe use a mild flea collar.
Apparently lilac is a bug deterrent. When we lived in Germany, we didn’t have screens and used lilac on the window sills. Maybe rub a little of that on? lol. I don’t know.
Natural Dog Foods
No, do not feed your dog raw garlic! Or onions!
Cooked garlic and onions can be okay if it’s in small amounts like what you’d find in a homemade gravy or pot roast recipe. But uncooked garlic (and onions) contain a sulfur compound (that is broken down by cooking) that can cause severe anemia and death.
I’m sorry – I wish I could suggest an alternative to your flea problem, but my dog lives indoors and, fortunately, doesn’t suffer from fleas. (We live in a low flea area.) Check with some other vets in your area.
(BTW, I totally agree with your name “Shelter puppies DO rule”!!!)

If you want to avoid chemicals, you may want to look into the use of diatomaceous earth to control fleas.

There seems to be a little confusion and difference in answerer’s as to
weather garlic is or isn’t toxic !
I think i t has a lot to do with it being raw or cooked ! I am sure i heard
that having it in their food cooked is good…. so bottom line check with
a vet.
Onions i heard are dangerous …. can kill, so i never cooked or raw
give it ever to my dog.
The rash your describing has actually occurred to my dogs different
times and in both occasions… seemed to have something to do with
applying the flee/tick ointment and shampoo …. and an allergic
reaction to the collar they were wearing . Same thing the skin would
be red raw, hair drop out . On removal of the collar over a short period
the problem resolved itself.
One was a leather collar from or made in ‘ Bali ‘ on the collar.
In another case it was actually a flee collar that did the damage !
Chucked both out at the time …..No more problems ( it is important
to note these incidents happened at different times with different
animals ). All the best
