Eugene D asked:

We have a 9 month old German Shephard puppy who when alone (or at night when we are asleep) who will chew up most anything. She likes especially things that have puffy cotton insides.

Keep aware of the pet's health. Be in the habit of giving him or her a routine exam on a regular basis so you can notice any unusual circumstances and take the appropriate action before these become truly serious and tough to deal with. Whenever you do need to treat your pet, opt for all-natural and herbal solutions to be certain you're choosing a gentle approach to your pet's condition. Limit the use of strong medicinal drugs that can cause significant unintended effects in the long run.

Natural dog remedies are readily available all over the net but it's always hard to know what treatment is most beneficial to purchase. Several of the pet foods are full of artificial ingredients that can harm or even kill your pet. Try to check ingredients and buy just the pet foods you've researched for yourself and found to be made using natural, nutritious ingredients. Quite often changing to a natural diet, rather than commercial dog food, will cause a vast enchancment in your dog's health.

Most of the best natural pet remedies are offered online. Investigate some of the products referenced on our site for a place to begin. It may seem a bit difficult to find beneficial organic products but if you do a little research you'll find the natural pet remedies you need. Most cost somewhat more than the items at the supermarket, but isn't your pet worth it?

Natural Dog Remedies

She needs to be crate trained first of all. Second, the best “remedy” is training.

cayenne pepper mixed with water. It sounds cruel, but it’s what my trainers always recommended. Spray it on the items you don’t want chewed. I wouldn’t spray it on white things though, or it could stain.

i suggest u get a crate and put her in there when she is alone unsupervised. it will keep your house safe but best of all it will keep ur dog safe. a dog running free to chew things isnt good there r many electrical wires and things she could get into. say the cleaning products in your kitchen or bathroom honestly i wouldnt risk it

My dog loved cotton stuffed things as a puppy too. She actually still loves them but I trained her not to chew anything unless I’ve told her she can. I would get her a kennel. My dog loves her kennel and it helps train and teach them at night it’s time to sleep. As far as natural remedy, make sure to always have your eye on her and when she is chewing on something bad tell her “NO!” and replace it with something she’s allowed to chew on.

She should be in a crate at night or when you cant watch her for her own safety. She could chew electrical cords or need a foreign body removed surgically if she swallows something bad.

ya it’s called a crate. Never leave a puppy alone loose in the house.

Nearly all 9 month old dogs chew, that’s what puppies do. You need to have your dog crated or kenneled when you cannot be watching her. She will grow out of the ‘chew everything’ stage soon, but until she is reliable in the house she needs to be in a kennel when alone.

GSD’s chew – especially when puppies.

Books, shoes, and anything that can be moved need to be cleaned up. There’s no reason to spray it with anything when it’s your family’s fault for leaving it out.

As far as furniture, I agree that crate training or better supervision is best. Or, at night, keep the pup baby gated in the kitchen. : )

dogs that chew and destroy furniture are usually very smart dogs that lack stimulation. It might be a good idea to invest in some dog toys rubber balls, teddy bears etc, these things dont last to long but are much cheaper than replacing furniture. Also he might need extra exercise.

Kudos to the people who are saying to crate train. It’s a great way to keep both the dog and house safe.
As for a chew deterrent, Powdered Alum (from the baking section of the market) mixed with some hand lotion has worked far better than any other spray etc I have ever tried. My one dog LOVES cayanne pepper, shes a freak!
Carrots are a great chew toy/ treat. When teething or for a special treat they can be given to the dog frozen! Make sure there are a lot of acceptable chew toys around. Good luck..you are almost there…just a few more months of insane puppyhood left!

She’s a German Shepherd, it’s prey drive. Get her some stuffed animals she CAN chew up, when you catch her chewing on items she is not allowed to, just tell her no, and hand her a toy, simple and effective. So, you will still have a cotton mess, I’ve learned to deal with it, I’m constantly picking up fuzz balls.

EDIT: If you go with crate training, which is good to do for any dog, do so gradually, lead her in the crate with a command, and a treat, leave her in there for 10-20 minutes at a time, a few times a day till she adjusts. German Shepherds also don’t fully mature till around two years old, I’ve noticed very high energy so keep her well entertained. I just brought in a new GSD male puppy, he’s doing good so far about the chewing.

she should be crated at night or when you are gone or can’t watch her. you also need to keep things picked up out of her reach. the things she is chewing up can make her sick if not cause a blockage that could kill her and give you a big vet. bill.

i have a dog that loves stuffed toys but she will totally disembowel them in a day or two so she doesn’t get them for her own safety.
